Get Inspired to Be Creative

As a hobby and crafting enthusiast, I am always looking for ways to use my skills in everyday life situations. When I am at home, I spend my time fixing up old chairs and making new paintings for the walls. At the office, I'm always doodling and make greeting cards for co-workers from scratch. One day, a friend told me that I should share my skills with the world so that everyone can learn to let their creative side out. It dawned on me that the best way to reach people throughout the world was to create a blog – and that's what I have done. I dedicated the information and ideas on this blog to everyone who is interested in creativity of any kind. Enjoy!

How To Make Decorative Wooden Signs For Your Home

William Rogers

Those wooden signs with quotes or sayings on them are seen just about everywhere these days. They fit in with just about any decorative style you have and are fairly simple to make yourself with the right supplies. Most of what you need is at your local hardware store. Read on for instructions to make your own decorative wooden sign yourself.

What You Need For The Project:

  • 1" x 8" piece of wood (depending on the project you are doing, you may want smaller or wider widths of wood)
  • Acrylic paint
  • Foam roller
  • Painter's tape
  • Ruler
  • Fine and coarse grit sandpaper (optional)
  • Stain
  • Rags

Instructions:

  1. Depending on the type of sign you are looking for, if you want something a little more rustic you can skip sanding down the wood. If you want something more traditional, you can sand the wood down to make it smooth.
  2. Stain the wood any color you prefer, using a rag to rub the stain into the wood. Allow the stain to dry and apply a second coating if you prefer the stain to be darker. You can also layer different colors of stain for a different look as well.
  3. After the stain is completely dry, use a stencil (or freehand) to create a saying on the sign such as a "welcome" sign for your porch, or you can choose to personalize a sign with your family name on it. Tape the stencil letters on the wood using a ruler to help guide you and to ensure the letters are all evenly spaced apart.
  4. Once the stencil letters are in place and taped down, use your foam roller and acrylic paint to paint over the stenciled letters. Try not to use too much paint on the roller to prevent bleeding over.
  5. As soon as you are finished with your letter stencils, remove the stencils before the paint is dry to prevent the stencil from drying onto the paint and damaging your paint job.
  6. Inspect the stenciled letters and make any touch-ups as needed.
  7. Allow the paint to dry completely before handling your project. To help protect the paint you can apply a clear coat of polyurethane (especially if your project will be outside).

This is just one sign project you can do. There are numerous possibilities of do-it-yourself signs you can create for your home. Some other ideas include making a house number sign for the front of your home, a "Gather" sign for your dining room, or you can create something else that's all your own.
